Why You Should Get Strong Before You Get Lean

Why You Should Get Strong Before You Get Lean

Most women want to be leaner. Many start with calorie deficit and strength training simultaneously. The combination is harder than sequencing — build muscle in modest calorie surplus first (or maintenance), then cut fat after muscle base is established.

Why sequencing wins

Building muscle in deficit is much slower. Cutting fat with strong muscle base reveals shape better. Year of strength training first, then 12-week fat loss often produces better aesthetic results than 12 months of trying both simultaneously.

If you're new to lifting, prioritise getting strong for 6-12 months before worrying about body fat. The muscle you build now is foundation for everything that follows.
