You don't need a lab-grade metabolic cart to train this correctly. A chest-strap heart rate monitor is more accurate than a wrist-based sensor, particularly during steady walking or cycling where wrist movement can throw off optical readings — Polar's H10 and Garmin's HRM-Pro are the two most reliable options in the $80–100 range. Perceived exertion works nearly as well once you've calibrated it against a monitor for a few sessions: Zone 2 should sit at roughly a 3 or 4 out of 10 on a subjective effort scale, noticeably easier than anything you'd call "cardio" in the traditional sense.
