The six-week postpartum check often gets framed as a return-to-exercise green light. It's actually just the start. Most women need 6-12 months of staged, pelvic-floor-aware training to safely return to pre-pregnancy intensity.

The recovery timeline that actually works

Weeks 0-6

Diaphragmatic breathing, gentle walking, pelvic floor activation (Kegels). Nothing more. Avoid crunches, planks, running, lifting heavier than your baby.

Weeks 6-12

After GP clearance: bodyweight squats, glute bridges, side-lying exercises, walking longer distances. Still no impact (running, jumping).

Months 3-6

Progressive loading with light dumbbells, longer walks, swimming. Introduce diastasis recti checks (if abdominal gap >2 fingers, more rehab before core work).

Months 6-12

Gradual reintroduction of impact (run-walk intervals first). Full strength training resumes.

Why rushing back causes problems

Pelvic floor: relaxin (the pregnancy hormone) softens ligaments for up to 6 months postpartum. Returning to running or jumping early causes urinary incontinence in 30-50% of new mothers — often persisting for years if not addressed.

Diastasis recti: abdominal muscles separated during pregnancy don't auto-heal. Crunches and traditional core work make it worse. Specific rehab exercises (heel slides, dead bugs, side planks done correctly) close the gap over months.
